Maricela Alaniz

Costume Designer | Filmmaker

I am a Mexican-American costume designer and filmmaker with a passion for bringing stories to life through visual design. I am currently pursuing my Master's at the University of California, San Diego.

I am drawn to exploring different cultures and identities, as well as understanding the dynamics of people’s motivations and choices. I am also fascinated by the technical and unconventional aspects of design, particularly finding creative solutions that can challenge, unsettle, or surprise an audience. As I continue to grow as a designer, I strive to create experiences that celebrate diversity and amplify underrepresented voices. My work reflects my dedication to fostering greater inclusivity in creative expression. Growing up in two culturally mixed communities has shaped my perspective with a strong sense of cultural pride and identity, and continues to influence the way I approach my craft.

“Costume design by Maricela Alaniz fits the time period, and Tracy’s orange two-piece outfit is adorable.”

“Costume creations were perfect to elevate the roles, characters, and settings. The entire production transported us to another point in time, and the costumes beautifully complemented the imaginative world of the show. Every element came together to create an unforgettable experience.”
